New minimum wage to be YTL 527 per month

The Minimum Wage Determination Commission yesterday set the minimum wage as YTL 527 for workers over the age of 16. The final decision on the minimum wage will go into effect on Jan. 1.

The new round in the ongoing minimum wage talks between the government and representatives of employer and labor unions was interrupted yesterday following the withdrawal of the Confederation of Turkish Labor Unions (Türk-İş) from the talks.

Türk-İş announced yesterday that it had decided to withdraw from the Minimum Wage Determination Commission since the government and the employer representatives were not taking their offers into consideration and had failed to meet their demands.

The last meeting of the Minimum Wage Determination Commission ended on Dec. 22 without any agreement. Türk-İş had warned after the meeting that they would leave the commission talks if the government offered a lower wage limit than they had demanded.

Türk-İş wanted a YTL 720 minimum wage for the new year. The minimum wage was YTL 503 for workers over the age of 16 and YTL 432 for workers below the age of 16.

Turkey to continue to cooperate with US

Turkey to continue to cooperate with US

Erdogan said he hoped the cooperation between Turkey and the US, including the intelligence sharing over the terror organization PKK would continue under new US administration.

Turkey, provided with intelligence by the United States, has stepped up its campaign to crackdown on the PKK both inside Turkey and in northern Iraq, after the terror organization increased its attacks on Turkish soldiers, as well as civilians.

"I believe the close relations between Turkey and Mr. Bush will progress with Mr. Obama," Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during his speech at Brookings Institute in Washington D.C.

Erdogan also urged President-elect Barack Obama to take brave decisions, saying there is an opportunity for such decisions and new beginnings.

"I believe Mr. Obama will succeed in this," the Turkish prime minister said, adding the U.S. president-elects actions would be carefully monitored by the rest of the world.

One-time vendor Erdoğan buys simit from street seller

While returning from an awards ceremony in Ankara yesterday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan asked his driver to stop his official car to buy simit, circular bread covered in sesame seeds, from a street vendor.

The prime minister bought a stack of simit at the entrance of Olgunlar Street and paid for it with coins.

While campaigning for the 2002 general elections, Erdoğan had talked about the days when he sold simit on the streets to show voters that he was not unfamiliar with their way of life while accusing other politicians of being alienated from the public.

Simit is a very popular traditional fast food in Turkey, and many people enjoy eating it for breakfast.
